THE BENEVOLENT BARRISTER - List 3 - Staying

Benevolent - Kind, charitable, philanthropic. This excellent word comes from the Latin bene, meaning “well or good”, and volo, meaning “to wish or will”. From these two borrowings, we can formulate sentences such as "Volunteers provide many benefits" or "I have become a benefactor to my family through my own volition."

Barrister - “A lawyer” in England who is a member of one of the Inns of the Court and has the privilege of pleading in the higher courts. This word, of Anglo-Saxon origin, comes from the time when a person with legal training was permitted to walk up to the bar, behind which sat the king or queen. This person would then plead a case which had been prepared by a solicitor for the solicitor's client. Therefore, those who went "before the bar" became barristers.
